Since our blissful, quiet Saturday afternoon Skootch has had distressing health problems. Saturday morning was the last meal he has eaten. He has been vomiting and in distress. I have taken him to the vet twice in the past 24 hours. He's had x-rays, blood work, anti-yakking meds (twice!), ultra sound and fluids. They can't find ANYTHING. I have racked up a huge vet bill. I would feel better about the bill if they had found something, anything that was wrong. At this point I feel emotionally spent and depressed. I am also distracted, trying to get work done, but not able to concentrate. I keep thinking I hear him throwing up again. Wah. I'll keep you posted.

  1. Purrs and prayers for Scootch...we all hope he turns a corner soon and feels better. It's so scary, having a sick kitty. Has he eaten something bad (bugs, plants) that could be poisonous? See if he'd eat baby food, that seems to be tempting for ill cats.

  3. Well, he's an indoor cat. I suppose a bug might have gotten inside, but unless it was a wasp or something - I don't know. I even opened a can of tuna in water (tuna "juice" is his favorite), and he barely sniffed at it.

  4. Purr and purrayers from us too. Will slippery elm help?

    Slippery Elm Syrup Recipe

(A good “food herb” tonic to help with vomiting, diarrhea, and other intestinal upsets in cats)

Put 1/2 cup of COLD water and 1 teaspoon of slippery elm powder (you may have to open the capsules if you don't have it as loose powder) into a small saucepan. Whip it up with a small whisk or fork. Bring it to a simmer over a LOW flame, stirring constantly. Do this for about 1 to 2 minutes, continuing to stir. Cool it off and refrigerate.

This will keep for about a week.

The best thing to do is to give to kitty about 1 teaspoon of the syrup about 15-30 minutes or so before meals. Alternatively, you can sprinkle some of the slippery elm powder on the food, but in acute situations (vomiting, nasty diarrhea) giving the syrup BEFORE meals can be much more effective.

  5. Hello I am visiting your blog for the first time, sorry for Skootch being sick, my cat was sick last week, did ultrasound and found no cause of fever and prostration, she did not pee or ate was worrying the vet applied a antibiotic without even knowing what it was, and it worked, she's fine. Hopefully Skootch also better soon. I really enjoyed your illustrations.

  7. Oh poor Skootch♥!!!
Did they test him for viruses. Was he tested for typhus. Antibiotics might be a great help. It might be stress from the procedures he recently had.
I'll be praying for his quick recovery. I know how stressful it is when you don't know anything, Hopefully it's something easy and silly that will go away.
Oh, and did he drink from toilet? Some times that makes them sick, specially if you have bowl cleaners attached.

  16. Yikes, Skootch, what are you doing?! Vomiting, not eating and distress doesn't sound good. I hope he gets better soon so you can settle your nerves. I'm the same way, when a cat is in distress, I'm in distress. Maybe purrs and prayers for you all.
