About 2 hours after I posted last night, Lucy passed away in John's arms. I had been giving him almost hourly updates during the day because she was in such distress, and after we got her diagnosis at the vet I called him. When we got home I called again and told him to hurry. Dr. Jeff was ready to come over whenever we called, but it turns out Lucy was just waiting for her Daddy to come home. Almost as soon as he picked her up, she had a spasm and died. I suppose this was the best way. I truly think she waited. Skootchie is very upset. I called him down for dinner but he wouldn't eat for a couple of hours. Finally, with lots of coaxing, he ate. Again this morning he wouldn't come down for breakfast (how I long for the days when he would wake me up in the wee hours!). He is clearly upset, and of course he can sense how sad we are.
This morning we took Lucy to the Pine Ridge Pet Cemetery (the oldest one in the U.S.) to have her cremated, John's choice. He is really broken up. He was there when she was born, and again when she died.
I am hoping Skootch can rebound a bit before we leave on Saturday. Maybe it's good we're going away - we all need some grieving and healing time. John's mom is a real cat person, so it will be good to stay with her.
Soon I'll post a more fitting tribute for Lucy...

  1. I am so sorry. One of the most difficult things is that our pets, our furry family members, do not live as long as we do.

I, too, had a cat die in my arms. Although terrible, I am glad that I was with him at the end.

  4. I'm sorry the loss of Lucy. The most beautiful thing is when man overcomes the fear of pain and gets to the end with her cat.

  5. Adios, sweet Lucy.

I don't think there's any question she was waiting for her dad. And as very sad as this is, she was surrounded by love and safety when she crossed...which is something I think we all want.

It will take some time for Skootch. A long time ago, when I lost the last of my two original cats, the little boy I'd gotten as a tiny kitten (Eddie, William's old bro) was distraught for weeks. His sadness with the loss of his sis was particularly poignant.

My thoughts are with you at this sad time.

  11. how very poignant that she was able to be with him one last time.. My heart goes out to all three of you. May time wear down the rough edges of the pain and let you remember the fun and the love with a smile instead of a tear

  33. Oh, Ann! Your comment on my site sent me to yours (I've now stuck it up on our topsites so we can see it - I've found that's best way for me to 'follow'. If I can see it, I will click on it regularily!) SO SO sorry to read your most recent posts. So hard to say goodbye to a pet pal, part of the family. Hope Skootch is coming to terms with it and you and John too. Still shed a tear for my old dog, and he's gone three years now. They leave a hole in the house. Mel and M x
